Whenever I think of World Sexual Health Day, very strong feelings come to my mind. I belonged to the global generation of experts and advocates that within the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS), organized the first World Sexual Health Day two years ago. Then, on 2011, the theme of World Sexual Health Day was “Youth’s Sexual Health: Shared rights and responsibilities” not only because of the International Year of Youth, but because of the WAS Youth Initiative which I created along with Esther Corona, WAS Executive Coordinator. Two weeks ago, different WAS Organizing Committees in 30 countries celebrated the Third World Sexual Health Day, consolidating an event that has grown because of the admirable volunteer work of dozens. I have seen pictures of activities that happened in Turkey, Lithuania, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Japan, Sweden, among many other countries. For the third time in a row, I co-organized WSHD in Mexico with great success. As the theme was: “In a diverse world, sexual health for all!”, some of the most unheard stories were given a space at two different University Forums in Mexico City, one at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the other one at my Alma Mater, the Universidad Iberoamericana. People living with disabilities, transgender people, immigrants, and children were the focus of the Forum at the Universidad Iberoamericana, in which we had the participation of Luis González Placencia, President of the Human Rights Commission in Mexico City, among other many experts. I was the one who talked about sexual health of challenges of Latin immigrants in New York City, based on my work with Community Health Worker Program East Harlem.
What’s should be in the future of WHSD? Definitely more international media promotion and recognition from organizations such as the UN, and I’m sure that WAS will get there. This year in Mexico, we were happily surprised to see that Salomón Chertorivski, our Minister of Health, tweeted about WSHD, becoming the first Minister of Health in the world to do so!
